Protect the Public, Protect Yourself
The Hernando County Democratic Party encourages Hernando County residents to continue to fight the spread of the coronavirus amidst the drastically increasing number of cases in Florida. It is up to each of us to take steps to slow the spread of the virus and ensure the health and safety of our friends, family, and neighbors. We urge everyone to please do your part by following CDC guidelines✝, including:
- Wear a face mask that covers your mouth and nose when you are out in public.
- Continue to maintain social distancing when you are out in public.
- Avoid crowded and indoor gatherings.
According to a study published this week in Nature Human Behaviour, “The use of social distancing, face masks, gloves and other individual protection measures has a massive impact in reducing the current peak of active cases.”
We recognize that businesses and institutions that require the wearing of face masks are well within their rights to do so, and that they do so in acknowledgment of their responsibilities to their community. It is our responsibility as individuals to wear our masks and maintain our distance, and it is the responsibility of our local businesses and institutions to create a safe and healthy environment for their staff and the public.
Finally, we condemn the idea that requiring the wearing of a mask is tyrannical or authoritarian. Promotion of the general welfare is among the most basic of government functions, so much so that it appears in the very first sentence of our Constitution. Our protected rights do not include the knowing endangerment of others, and attempts to mitigate the dangers of spreading the coronavirus are not, in fact, “Communism.”
